Nano bonds and micro rings are the two methods clients ask for by name — and the two most stylists weigh up when deciding which technique to add to their offering. Both are premium, both are semi-permanent, and both can transform a salon's revenue. The difference is in the finish, the longevity, and the client you're building for.

Nano bonds use a micro-fine keratin-style bond fused around a tiny bead, sitting flush to the scalp. The result is undetectable — even on fine or thinning hair — and lasts three to five months before a full removal and reapplication. Because there's no heat and no visible attachment, they're the go-to for the luxury client who wants extensions no one can see.

Micro rings (also known as nano rings when using the smaller silicone bead) thread the client's hair through a ring and clamp it shut. They're faster to apply, easier to reposition, and a comfortable entry point for stylists new to extensions. They shine on medium-to-thick hair where a small bead disappears into the density.

Which should you train in?

If you're building a salon around the invisible-extension client — the woman who wants length and density no one can spot — nano bonds are the technique to master. The price point is higher, the retention is longer, and repeat bookings become your bread and butter.

If your clientele is younger, more price-sensitive, or wants a method that can be moved up quickly, micro rings are a strong starting point. Many stylists learn one and add the other later — nano bond training builds on the sectioning and consultation skills you already have.
